ABOUT YOUR BASIC CRUISING SKILLS COURSE
This 32 hour Sail Canada course develops the skills to both operate and command a 6m to 12m sailboat in
moderate, daytime conditions. The course includes 6 hours of Ashore Knowledge that supports what you will learn
on the water as well as skills you will need as skipper. This will prepare you for the exam which we refer to as
the BASIC CRUISING STANDARD CHALLENGE.
You will also have the option of writing the Pleasure Craft Operators Card test, both of which
are required to own / operate your own boat in Canada.

parts of the boat and rigging – safety equipment – manoeuvring under power
handling the boat under sail – docking and undocking- sail trim and adjustments
duties of skipper and crew – crew overboard procedures – anchoring
rules of the road – weather – basic chart reading – tides and currents

-Mon + Wed or Tues +Thurs 6pm-9pm for 4 weeks plus one full weekend day

You will be provided with a Sail Canada seal and log book, and the
text book. Your successful completion of this
course will be based on your competence in the crew overboard completion and 70% on the end of course exam
which is the (BASIC CRUISING STANDARD CHALLENGE).
